We started today mustering the strength to get out of our beds, after a night of drinking Bijou, to meet Conner, her mom, and aunt. After having met with them, we began our tour of the Maijishan Grottos, which had been a far-off destination for us for a while. There was a soft rain that fell as we explored the grottos and experienced our first day of smog since the entering the mountains. After the grottos, we had a hot pot lunch with Conner's family then vegged in the hotel after they left. We got our resupply from Conner which included some mail from friends back home which was nice to receive.
It was a surreal experience being at the grottos. For the first time we were at one of the historic sites of the Silk Road. It was here that offerings would be made either of money or time to create these grottos with the monuments inside them. These offerings were to have good fortune and ensure safety on the long and hard journey ahead. These days the offerings are just the ticket cost going to preservation and restoration. For us the hope is the same as we look at the daunting journey ahead as so many others have done before us in this place. Here now we can truly feel that we are following in the footsteps of history.
